Signs Your Ductwork Has Seen Better Days

Signs Your Ductwork Has Seen Better DaysYour Grand Traverse County home’s ductwork is an essential component of your heating, cooling, and ventilation system. Air ducts left to age and wear out become defective and cause a whole host of problems including increased energy costs, poor quality indoor air, and spotty, inconsistent indoor heating and cooling. If you suspect that defective ductwork is costing you, take note of the following procedures, signs, and fixes.

  1. Evaluating age. It is safe to say that the seals, seams, and joints in air ducts installed within a new construction home will begin deteriorating in less than a decade following its construction. This is because residential air ducts are often poorly designed and constructed by building contractors and not HVAC-specific professionals.
  2. Inspection time. Evaluating the whole of your Michigan home’s ductwork system can be rough because most of it is hidden behind walls and in other inaccessible places. However, by inspecting what is exposed – such as where it’s installed in your attic – can help give you an idea of the whole system’s condition. Use duct sealing tape and caulking compounds to cover any visible air leaks in duct joints and seams.
  3.  Indoor air flow. Go throughout your home’s various rooms and living spaces. Places where you feel a reduced volume of air flow may be connected to air duct segments that have become deteriorated, partially or completely collapsed, or otherwise disconnected from the air handler.
  4. The blower door test. For the definitive air leak and ductwork evaluation, it is essential to contact an expert HVAC contractor for a home blower door test. This test utilizes a blower fan to pressurize your home and calculate for an exact figure of air leakage. During this procedure, the contractor will go through your home to determine the areas that are losing the most to leakage effects.
