When winter hits Northern Michigan, the last thing you want to deal with is your furnace not turning on. Before panic sets in, know that many heating issues are caused by simple, fixable problems. Here are five of the most common reasons your furnace won’t start — and what you can do about them.
1. Thermostat Settings or Batteries
It may sound obvious, but your thermostat is the first place to check. Make sure it’s set to heat, and the temperature is set higher than the current room temp. If it’s battery-powered, replace the batteries. A dead thermostat can’t send the signal your furnace needs to start.
2. Tripped Breaker or Power Issue
If your furnace isn’t running at all, check your electrical panel. A tripped breaker or blown fuse can stop power to the unit. Flip the switch fully off, then back on. If it keeps tripping, call a professional — it could point to a deeper electrical issue.
3. Clogged Air Filter
A dirty filter restricts airflow, causing the system to overheat and shut down for safety. Check your filter and replace it if it looks dusty or gray. Clean filters keep your furnace running efficiently and safely.
4. Pilot Light or Ignition Problems
Older gas furnaces use a pilot light that can blow out. Newer models rely on electronic ignition, which can fail over time. If you don’t see a steady blue flame, or your system clicks but doesn’t ignite, it’s time for a service call.
5. Blocked Air Intake or Exhaust
Snow and ice can easily block your furnace’s exterior vent pipes — especially during heavy Northern Michigan storms. Clear any buildup around the intake and exhaust to restore airflow. This is one of the most common (and easiest) cold-weather fixes.
