Winterize Your Home And Keep Old Man Winter At Bay

Winterize Your Home And Keep Old Man Winter At BayTaking steps to winterize your home can result in significant savings, better home comfort and reduced damage to your home from extreme winter conditions. Carve out some time in your schedule to conduct the following tasks:

  • Check gutters. Effective drainage is imperative during the winter season. Melting snow and ice should drain away from your home to prevent water damage at the foundation. Further, a clogged drain can result in ice dams, which may lead to roof damage. As a general rule, make sure that gutters drain water at least 10 feet from the foundation.
  • Improve insulation. With an effective barrier in place to prevent heat from moving out of your home, you’ll be noticeably more comfortable, and your furnace won’t have to work as hard to compensate for heat loss. Having the proper amount of insulation in your attic prevents ice dams, moisture damage and heat loss. To effectively winterize your home with insulation, work with a professional to assess insulation levels and run the numbers to evaluate which insulation improvement projects are most worthwhile.
  • Seal leaks. Keep more heat inside your home by sealing air leaks that occur throughout the home’s perimeter, including walls, ceilings, basement and attic. With an airtight home, you’ll keep more heated air inside where it belongs.
  • Schedule furnace maintenance. Annual service is the key to ensuring that your furnace can operate as efficiently as possible over the winter, as preventive maintenance includes a comprehensive system cleaning. The heating technician can identify minor problems before they lead to costly, extensive repairs.
  • Check the ducts. During maintenance, be sure that your technician also checks the ductwork, as leaks allow heat loss to occur, and poorly insulated ducts — or ducts that aren’t insulated at all — encourage heat loss through conduction.
