Programmable WiFi thermostats have many features that can make your life easier and also save you a lot of money. They are similar to conventional thermostats in that they control the heating and cooling of your house. But what’s unique about WiFi thermostats is that they connect to your home network, enabling you to control them via your smartphone, computer, or a remote control.
There are several brands of programmable thermostats on the market. Due to differences in models, it’s always best to consult with an HVAC professional before purchasing, to be sure to find the one that best suits your needs.
WiFi thermostats can help lower your bills and make your HVAC system more effiecient. Some of the features available include:
- Customizable scheduling. For example, if you are away from home all day, you probably don’t need the heat on while you’re gone. A programmable thermostat allows you to schedule it to turn on the heat just when you need it, and turns it off when you don’t. Some thermostat brands automatically learn your climate preferences after a few days; others must be manually programmed.
- Connecting remotely to your WiFi thermostat. If, for any reason, you need to change the settings while away from home, you can connect to your HVAC system via an app on your smartphone or on your computer, adjusting your home climate settings as needed.
- Automatically adjusting the temperature based on the current weather. Sensors can be installed outside your home to determine the weather, and adjust the temperature settings in your home accordingly.
- Motion sensing to determine when you’re away. Some models have the ability to tell when you’re away on vacation. These devices use motion sensors installed throughout the house to determine if the occupants are around. If no movement is detected for an extended period of time, the thermostat switches to “away” mode.
