Getting a humidifier is a smart decision that will add much-needed moisture to your dry winter air. You will need to make a choice between a whole-house humidifier or a portable humidifier. There are pros and cons for each choice, but a whole-house humidifier is the clear winner if you value your time and your money.
- Save time with a whole-house humidifier: With a portable humidifier, you’ll need to set aside some time to maintain the unit. The unit’s water reservoir will need to be refilled every day, otherwise it can breed biological contaminants which can be bad for your health. Whole-house humidifiers require almost no maintenance.
A portable humidifier will not be able to control the moisture levels of the whole house like a whole-house humidifier can. You will need to move a portable unit from room to room. It’s more convenient to let a whole-house humidifier take care of your whole house.
- Save money with a whole-house humidifier: A humidifier works by spreading moisture throughout indoor air with the use of a blower. A whole-house humidification system is installed within a heating system, using the blower fan already in the unit. Compare that with a portable unit, which will have to come equipped with its own blower.
Since a whole-house humidifier will be able to humidify the whole house, you’ll feel more comfortable at lower temperatures. Thus, you will be able to lower the temperature and save some money on heating costs.
- Benefits of a portable humidifier: Despite all of its benefits, a whole-house humidifier isn’t the right choice for everyone. If you live in an apartment or if you know you will move soon, a portable humidifier is something that you can easily take with you. If you only need humidity added in one room rather than the whole house, you should look into a portable unit.
