Touch your water heater. Is it warm? Then you need insulation for the best possible water heater efficiency. It’s not expensive to add insulation to your water heater and doing so will save you money in water heating costs. Depending on your usage of hot water, insulation for your water heater might result in savings amounting to about 4 to 9 percent.
You can also check your water heater’s R-value to determine whether you need to add insulation to your water heater. Water heaters with R-values higher than R-24 are efficient enough that they don’t need added insulation. If your water heater has a R-value lower than R-24, you would get better water heater efficiency by adding insulation that has a value of at least R-8. R-value is the standard method of measuring insulation. The “R” stands for resistance.
If you have an electric water heater, you might be able to install insulation to your water heater yourself if you’re handy. You can find water heater insulation, in the form of a pre-cut jacket or a blanket, at hardware and department stores. However, if you have a gas water heater, it’s best to have a professional install it for you. A professional also will be able to install insulation for an electric water heater if you’d prefer not to do it yourself.
For added water heater efficiency (if you have an electric water heater), you might consider installing insulation to the top of the tank and/or to the bottom of the tank.
As a safety precaution, don’t set the thermostat hotter than 130 degrees if you have an electric water heater along with a insulation jacket or blanket.
