Upgrade Home Insulation For Optimal Energy Efficiency

Upgrade Home Insulation For Optimal Energy EfficiencyThe decision to upgrade home insulation requires a bit of thought and planning. Since one of the keys to having an energy-efficient home is the quality of the insulation, it is important to make sure you home’s insulation is all it should be. To do this, you must first carry out a thorough inspection of your entire home to see whether it has insulation where it needs it and if this insulation meets current standards.

Start With The Attic

Heat naturally rises in any home, so the first and most important area to look at when you want to upgrade home insulation is the attic. According to the US Energy Star program Michigan is in Zone 5, which means that the insulation in your attic should be at least R-40. If it is not, you should add more.

The Walls

Checking the insulation inside finished walls can be difficult. You can remove plates from electrical outlets, but make sure you turn off the power first. Probe into the area with a screwdriver to see if you can feel insulation. If you want a better look, you can also cut a small hole that you later repair. When doing this, it is best to choose an out of the way spot like behind the sofa.

If you have little or no insulation in the walls, you do not have to tear them out to add it. You can instead hire a professional to blow or inject either loose or expanding foam insulation into the walls through holes.

The Basement

If you have a drafty basement, you are losing a lot of energy. In particular, if you use the basement area as a room, it should be well insulated. Foam board is a good choice for basements. You can also spray canned foam insulation to fill any gaps in the sill or around pipes exiting your home.
