If you’re a homeowner, it’s likely that you’ll need to call a plumber from time to time. Knowing how to choose a contractor with the right credentials and experience can help you avoid inconvenience and potential property damage down the road.
Hiring the right plumbing contractor is easy if you follow these suggestions:
Ensure that the contractor is licensed. In Michigan, plumbing contractors have to obtain a license through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Plumbing Division. The company’s journeymen and master plumbers must be licensed too. Ask for the contractor’s license number and verify that it’s up to date.
Inquire about insurance.Plumbers should have general liability and workers’ compensation insurance to shield you against property damage, personal liability and employee injuries on the job. Before they begin working on your home, ask for a copy of your contractor’s certificate of general liability insurance, the name of their carrier and proof of workers’ compensation coverage.
Ask how long the contractor has been in business. A company with years of experience serving area homeowners is more likely to have a track record of providing top-notch plumbing services. If you decide to hire a large plumbing company, ask about the experience level of the employee(s) who’ll work in your home.
Request references. Reputable plumbers should readily agree to give you the names of some of their previous customers. When you get them, be sure to follow through and contact each one. Ask if the work performed was done satisfactorily, if it was completed on time and whether the individual would hire the contractor again.
Ask for bids and guarantees in writing. Before you choose a plumber, get at least three written bids. Don’t settle for total price estimates. Instead, ask for a breakdown of labor charges, materials, parts and make sure the scope of the job is specified. Ask each contractor to include details of their guarantee on workmanship and parts in the bid.
