Radiant floor heating systems are a very effective alternative to traditional heating provided by furnaces and heat pumps. They work by supplying heat directly to the floor of the area being heated. Heat rises from the floor and is transferred from the warm surface directly to the room through a process called radiant heat transfer. A radiant floor heating system means you are living and working on a heated surface warm enough to provide heat even in climates that see many months of cold temperatures each year.
There are three types of radiant floor heating systems:
- Electricity-heated – Electric radiant floors generate heat through a system of electric cables installed directly into the floor. They can also work via a wide mat of electrically conductive plastic installed into a subfloor beneath a covering of tile. Electricity prices usually make these types of floor heating systems cost-prohibitive.
- Air-heated – These systems heat a layer of air under the floor. This heated air transfers heat to the floor and into the space above it. They are not very practical and can be costly since air does not hold heat well. They are not often used for home heating.
- Hydronic – Hydronic radiant floor heating offers the best efficiency and price for most home heating applications. It uses a series of tubes in the floor to circulate hot water from a solar-powered or fuel-burning boiler. Room temperature is controlled by regulating the amount of hot water flowing through the tubes. The flow tubes are usually either embedded directly into the concrete floor or run through a thin layer of gypsum or concrete placed on top of an existing floor.
