Choosing a new or replacement heating system for your home brings with it inevitable questions of efficiency and reliability. If you’ve always used a heat pump or an electric or fuel-powered furnace, you’ll be tempted to stick with what you know. For homeowners in the Grand Traverse County area, however, hybrid heating systems provide another alternative that combines the best of these two types of heating to achieve a level of efficiency and reliability that neither could provide by itself.
Hybrid heating systems, also known as dual-fuel systems, consist of an electric heat pump and a furnace that burns fossil fuels such as oil, gas or propane. The heat pump provides cooling and, when temperatures are lower but still moderate, heating. When temperatures drop below about 30 degrees, the system shifts to the furnace, which provides heat during colder periods.
It is important to keep in mind that when temperatures fall much below the freezing point, heat pumps quickly lose efficiency. You must keep the furnace part of the dual-fuel system maintained and ready to function when temperatures are falling. Otherwise, you lose most of the benefit of having a dual-fuel system in the first place. You’ll also waste both energy and money by relying solely on a less-efficient heat pump for heating during cold periods. Since the Grand Traverse area sees several months of below-freezing temperatures a year, it would be unwise to expect the heat pump to carry a majority of your home’s seasonal heating burden.
Using a hybrid heating system also means that you’ll have to manage two sources of fuel. However, the efficiency of a dual-fuel system, demonstrated by noticeable savings on your heating bills, can easily make up for the inconvenience.
