When heating or cooling a home with a traditional single-zone HVAC system, it’s often difficult to maintain a consistent temperature from room to room. Some areas may be too warm, while others are too cold. A zoning system can virtually eliminate these temperature variations and boost comfort year-round.
How Zoned Systems Work
With a zoned system, the home is divided into multiple independent heating and cooling areas by motorized dampers installed in the ductwork. Individual thermostats control each zone, and these are connected to a central control panel. This allows you to program different temperatures in various zones to maintain an ideal comfort level throughout the home based on use and occupancy.
Zoned systems are ideal for larger homes. They’re also well-suited for homes with features that make temperature variations likely, such as numerous large windows, cathedral ceilings, lofts and sunrooms, or a finished living space in an attic, basement.
Benefits of an HVAC Zoning System
It’s relatively easy to have a zoned system installed, and doing so offers a number of benefits.
- Energy savings. A well-designed zoning system makes heating and cooling more efficient overall. For example, you can program one temperature for the bedroom areas, a different temperature for the main living space and still another for seldom-used rooms and areas. When paired with programmable thermostats, zoning systems can lower yearly energy bills by up to 30 percent.
- Greater comfort. Compared to a traditional HVAC system that’s controlled by a single thermostat, zoning can significantly enhance comfort by supplying warm or cool air precisely where and when it’s needed.
- Longer equipment life. When you have a zoned heating and cooling system, the furnace, central A/C or heat pump doesn’t have to run at full capacity all of the time. This reduction in wear and tear can prolong the equipment’s useful service life.
