Utility Bills too High? Schedule an Energy Audit to Find and Fix Wasteful Areas

Utility Bills too High? Schedule an Energy Audit to Find and Fix Wasteful AreasAre you spending too much to keep your home comfortable throughout the heating and cooling seasons? If you’re not sure what improvements will solve the problem, a professional energy audit can identify solutions to help you reduce energy waste and lower your utility bills.

Rather than simply looking at the individual aspects of your home, an audit examines how it performs as one system.

  • A professional auditor starts with measuring the square footage of your home and gathering information. They’ll want to look at your utility bills, and they’ll ask how many occupants live in the home, if anyone is usually there during the day, whether all the rooms are used, and what temperature you keep your thermostat set at in the winter and summer.

  • The auditor then moves on to assessing the different components of your home. These include the HVAC system and its ductwork, the ventilation system, the lighting, and the condition of the windows. They’ll also look at the water heater and any combustion appliances, as well as your home’s moisture levels and air quality.

  • During the process, the auditor will use special tests to investigate critical areas of your home that can have a large impact on its energy efficiency. A blower door test is used to measure and locate where air is escaping/entering through unsealed gaps and cracks. Using infrared and still cameras, the auditor also will perform a thermographic inspection to find any areas where additional insulation is needed.

By using all of this data to create a complete picture of how your home functions as a system, an energy auditor can identify what’s working well, and what needs improvement. They’ll also offer recommendations on how to increase your home’s energy efficiency logically and cost-effectively. You’ll can then invest in necessary upgrades knowing that you’ll enjoy lower utility bills and increased comfort when they’re completed.
