Determine If Your House Could Benefit From a Home Energy Audit

Determine If Your House Could Benefit From a Home Energy AuditIf your household energy consumption is too high but you’re not sure how to improve efficiency, a home energy audit can provide the answers. An audit can identify specific causes of energy waste and show you what upgrades to make to lower your energy bills by up to 30 percent.

What’s Involved in a Home Energy Audit

The energy audit process used to evaluate your home includes a number of key steps:

  • The auditor begins by asking questions and gathering information. He’ll look at your past year’s energy bills to arrive at a base consumption, and ask you about the household’s day-to-day energy usage and your concerns. He’ll also explain the audit process so you’ll know what to expect.
  • Next, the auditor will perform a thorough exterior and interior inspection of your home. All the various systems and components are checked and evaluated, including ventilation, electrical, insulation, lighting, HVAC equipment and ducting, combustion appliances, fireplaces, water heating equipment, windows and doors. He’ll also inspect safety features such as smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • During the process, the auditor looks for deficiencies that can lead to energy losses, but also assesses all the different aspects of your home to identify potential health and safety issues like fuel leaks, electrical hazards, lead-based paint, high moisture levels and poor air quality.
  • The auditor uses special testing methods and equipment to evaluate the efficiency of different areas of your home. One is a blower door test, where a powerful fan is used to depressurize the structure and pinpoint drafts and leaks. Another is a thermographic inspection that employs infrared and still cameras to locate areas where insulation is lacking.
  • Once the audit is complete, the technician compiles and analyzes all the data to create a comprehensive report on the state of your home’s energy efficiency. You’ll learn where to make effective upgrades and improvements to boost comfort and lower your household energy consumption and costs.
