Easy Ways To Allergy-Proof Your Home During Michigan Pollen Season

When it’s pollen season in Michigan, you want to make sure your home is protected.  Allergy-proofing your home will help you breathe easy by vastly improving the quality of your indoor air. Implement some of these easy solutions to keep allergy-irritating pollutants out of your home.

Upgrade Your Air Filters
All air filters are measured by their minimum efficiency reporting value. This allows consumers to compare various brands and decide how much protection they want. A filter with a MERV 16 rating is among the most efficient and will capture a large percentage of particles in the air.

Keep Your Windows Shut
This is one of the easiest ways to allergy-proof your home. Pollen spreads through the air, so naturally, shutting your windows will keep pollen from entering and circulating through your air system. This will also help your HVAC system work more efficiently.

Invest in a Dehumidifier
If the humidity in your home is consistently above 50 percent, the air can become a fertile breeding ground for things like mold and mildew.  A dehumidifier will help to prevent mold and mildew formation. A hygrometer can monitor the humidity in your home to help you determine if you need a dehumidifier.

Increase Ventilation
Other areas of your home to watch are the attic and crawlspace. Moisture in these places can also foster mold growth. By allowing air to get in and out of these areas, you can help dry out moisture before it accumulates to dangerous levels. Replace the covers on your attic’s soffits with ridged vents to let air circulate without letting in rainwater.
