Although typically out of sight and out of mind, the ductwork system in your Northern Michigan home may be causing you needless waste of energy dollars and robbing you of heating/cooling efficiency and home comfort. Improper duct sealing can even be a contributing factor to certain health problems, especially for those suffering from allergies, asthma or other respiratory ailments.
Even if your ducts were perfectly installed and sealed initially, over time they’ve likely developed leaks due to structural shifting and degradation of the tape, mastic or sealants originally applied. According to Energy Star, homes with leaky ducts may have reduced heating/cooling efficiency of up to 20 percent. With just a small investment, however, new duct sealing applied to any leaks will immediately make your home safer, more comfortable and energy efficient.
Since much of your ductwork may be hidden behind walls or under floors, checking for and fixing leaks is not normally something easily accomplished by most homeowners, with the exception of those exposed and easily accessible in the attic or garage. For this reason, it’s probably prudent to hire a professional HVAC person to do the job.
This is not something that should be overlooked or put off. Besides the advantages of being able to reclaim 20 percent of wasted energy dollars, there are health and safety aspects to consider.Leaky ducts can allow dust, fumes, insulation particles and other pollutants to enter the system and circulate throughout your home. They can also set up a back-draft scenario, causing carbon monoxide produced by your fuel-burning appliances to enter into your living space rather than be drawn outside through appliance venting systems. In addition to the above outlined advantages of proper duct sealing, you will also experience an improved level of home comfort with fewer hot or cold spots and more even temperatures throughout.
