One of the most energy efficient ways to heat and cool your home in Grand Traverse County is to use a dual-fuel system. Until recently, heat pumps worked best in warm winter climates throughout the sunbelt states, but new technological improvements make these systems ideal for heating, even this far north.
These systems combine the heating efficiencies of heat pumps with fuel-burning equipment to supplement the heat gathering capacity of the pumps. When temperatures are in the 30s or higher, a heat pump in top condition is capable of delivering heat nearly 300 percent more efficiently than a highly-efficient gas or oil furnace can. The dual-fuel systems have sensors that switch from one system to another, depending on the outdoor temperatures. Instead of using fossil fuels throughout the long heating season, you decrease your consumption when temperatures are moderate.
A dual-fuel system in most cases, can use your existing gas, propane or oil forced air furnace to provide the extra heat when temperatures are cold. Besides saving money during spring and fall, the heat pumps provide efficient cooling on hot summer days to both chill the air and remove excess humidity.
Special features on a dual-fuel pump system can increase your energy savings throughout the year. Options include:
- Scroll compressors, which are different from typical piston compressors and increase the temperature of the heated air as much as 10 to 15 degrees. These compressors often outlast their piston counterparts.
- Variable-speed motors use far less electricity to blow heated or cooled air throughout your home, winter and summer. These motors run much more quietly for longer periods, which eliminates hot or cold spots throughout your home.
