Changing your air filter on a regular basis is, in most cases, a relatively minor HVAC maintenance task. However, it’s also one of the most commonly forgotten tasks.
To keep your HVAC system in great shape, here are a few tips you can use to remember those air filter changes.
Set a Reminder on Your Phone Or Computer
Take advantage of the latest in digital tech by creating a reminder using your smartphone, tablet or computer. These devices will usually have a day planner or calendar function that can be used to create audio and visual event alerts. Simply set your alert according to your software or hardware manufacturer’s instructions.
If you don’t have a phone or computer or if you can’t set up a digital reminder, you can put your actual digits to work and create a written reminder. You can create a reminder on a sticky note and place it near the HVAC unit or you can simply mark the task on your physical calendar, if you have one.
Add It to Your Chores
Making air filter changes a part of your regular household chores can help cement that activity in your head. Once you’ve done it a few times along with other chores, changing those filters will become second-nature. Make sure to actually write this activity down on your chore lists, as this also serves as an initial visual reminder until you’re able to work from memory.
Keep It in Plain View
You can create another daily visual reminder by leaving a clean air filter nearby. Preferably this should be done somewhere you’ll look at it on a regular basis.
However, the last thing you’ll want to do is drop a stack of air filters in front of your HVAC unit and in plain view of visitors and family members. Instead, pick a spot that’s not quite conspicuous but heavily trafficked nonetheless. This includes your kitchen, laundry room or hallway closet.
